Bayeux is a nice, quiet medieval town in the département du Calvados that would be totally unknown to tourists if two events hadn't took place in the French and European history: the battle of Hastings in 1066 and the landing on Normandie on 6th June 1944. In fact, the two attractions that lead a tourist to Bayeux are the tapisserie de la Reine Mathilde ("Queen Mathilde's tapestry") and the beaches of the landing, that lie not far from the town. Bayeux was one of the few lucky towns of Normandie whose centre didn't suffer any damages during the military operations of the allies. |
