The town of Reine Mathilde

by Mikebond - last update: May 9, 2006

Bayeux is a nice, quiet medieval town in the département du Calvados that would be totally unknown to tourists if two events hadn't took place in the French and European history: the battle of Hastings in 1066 and the landing on Normandie on 6th June 1944.
In fact, the two attractions that lead a tourist to Bayeux are the tapisserie de la Reine Mathilde ("Queen Mathilde's tapestry") and the beaches of the landing, that lie not far from the town.
Bayeux was one of the few lucky towns of Normandie whose centre didn't suffer any damages during the military operations of the allies.

Hi Mike ~ I started my morning with a trip through Bayeux and Verona - nice memories. I'll be back to look at more of your musings later. Greetings from Augusta, GA.

It is interesting to learn that Bayeux has much more to share than the famous tapestry ! Interesting page !

Thanks for posting the Bayeux tips. We did not know much about Bayeux other than the tapestry. It looks like a town worth visiting.
