    Getting TO/AROUND: The metro system of Paris is one of the most efficient in Europe (it's said that no point of the city is more than 500 metres far from a metro station), even if it is only the fourth most extended network after London, Moskva and Madrid. It consists of 14 lines for a total of 212.50 kms. Every time I have been to Paris I have always moved by métro.
    To travel on metro, buses and trams by RATP, you can buy:
    - a single ticket: EUR 1.40 (when I used the metro in 2002 it cost EUR 1.30);
    - a "carnet" of 10 tickets: full price EUR 10.50, half price 5.25. I think half price is for young and aged people;
    - a "Carte orange", which is a 7-day pass whose price changes according to the areas you want to move within (there are eight from the city centre): areas 1-2 (city centre) EUR 15.40 for a week. It's the pass my parents and I bought when we spent two weeks in Paris in 2003.
    For more prices, see the site of RATP reported below.

    Getting TO/AROUND: Gare Montparnasse is one of the six terminus railway stations of Paris. TGV trains to Western and South-Western France (Rennes, Nantes, Bordeaux) leave from here.
    The building is very modern, in stain and glass. There is a metro station under the railway station, called Montparnasse-Bienvenüe (lines 4, 6, 12, 13).

     Yes, I well remember that hot summer of 2003 -- not conducive to city sightseeing, by any means. But I enjoyed reading your well-researched tips. Good idea to use that tree to hide the scaffolding.
