On May 31, 1889, a terrible event occurred near Johnstown, PA. A large earthen dam failed after 11 straight days of rain send a wall of water 40 feet high down through the Conemaugh River Valley to Johnstown which destroyed everything in its path and also took over 2200 lives that fateful day. The event is now known as the great Johnstown Flood. There is a memorial there run by the National Park Service in South Fork, just north of Johnstown.
