Montana Warnings Or Dangers Tips by pipsqueak

There are places in ranch country in Montana that allow 'open range'. There aren't fences to keep the cattle off the highway. You really wouldn't want to hit a heifer with your rental car...it would end badly.
Be careful in western Montana if you are backpacking or camping in the wild backcounty. Encountering a grizzly bear in the wild is pretty rare, but I don't think the Forest Service puts these signs up just for the fun of it. Bears have a great sense of smell, so make sure you keep food and other things that may smell good to a bear a long way from your tent.
They DO have speed limits again in Montana. This picture is from 1998 when 'reasonable and prudent' was the rule of thumb. A lot of people still got speeding tickets because their interpretation of reasonable and prudent was not always the same as that of the State Police.
If you are visiting any of the Parks or Wilderness areas in Montana, keep in mind that the animals you see are not tame. This mountain goat was near the visitor's center at Logan Pass in Glacier National Park, and people were actually trying to get close enough to pet it. I'm always hoping those people try to pet the next buffalo they see as well. As Forrest Gump would say, 'Stupid is as stupid does.'
