Things To Do: The Manatee
  • Tip Rating:
  • A female manatee gives birth to a calf once every 2/5 years but can occasionally give birth to twins. Manatee calves suckle from their mothers and when they are about 4 months old they start to eat vegetation. They stay with their mothers learning how to survive for food, warm waters and migratory routes until they are between 1-2 years old. (If only our siblings took as much notice! :)

Manatees are between 4/5 years old before they are fully grown and weight about 1000-1200 pounds and 10-12 feet in length. They can consume over 150 pounds of vegetation each day!! Although mainly vegetarians a manatees diet is also supplemented by the insects living on the vegetation which they eat.

    Things To Do: The Manatee
  • Tip Rating:
  • You are transported on a pontoon up a meandering river which is so tranquil and peaceful, it was a lovely experience. When you disembark you are free to wonder at your leisure.

And here at last I saw the reason for my visit, the manatees, such a wonderful experience.

    Things To Do: The Hippo
  • Tip Rating:
  • This park is made up of wetlands and a spring-run stream that bubbles up out of the 45 foot deep Homosassa Springs.

The staff are extremely helpful and answered all our questions, they also rehabilitate injured or orphaned manatees here at the park. The natural spring environment helps them to acclimatise before they are returned to the wild.

I was just a kid when my Dad took me to Homosassa Springs. I was fascinated then then, and would love to return.
