We could not drive from Los Angeles to San Diego without stopping and having a look around the Queen Mary.
Such a beautiful ship, built on Clydebank in Scotland by John Brown & Co.Ltd for Cunard. She was launched on 26th September 1934 and made her maiden voyage on 27th May 1936.
She weighed over 80,000 tons!!!
She was used as a troop ship during WWII bringing the wounded back to the USA and also carrying G.I. Brides and children to the USA.
Winston Churchill sailed on her 3 times.
She carried over 15,000 troops at a time during WWII.
She sailed the Atlantic over 1,000 times.
After the war she returned to her status of a luxury liner until she was decommissioned in 1967.
She was then removed from the British Registry and became the property of the City of Long Beach on 11th December 1967. |
