  • The Church of St Cyril and Methodius (Kostel sv Cyril a Metodej) was a place I had wanted especially to visit on my trip to Prague.
A few years ago we had watched a film called 'Operation Daybreak' which was based on a true story of Czech soldiers who were recruited by the British Aarmy to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich. This is the church where they later hid from the Nazi's.

  • Heydrich had been sent to Prague in 1941 because of the activities of the resistance movement. He was a much hated man who was very ruthless.
The Czech soldiers had the help of local people who risked their lives to help. The attempt was made on Heydrichs life on 27th May 1942 but he did not die for a few days. The men had to go into hiding and it was here in this church crypt where they were hidden with the priests help.

  • For 3 weeks, 7 of the soldiers hid in the church, but one of the first 3 who were recruited and parachuted in together feared for the lives of his wife and family betrayed where they were hiding to the Nazi's.
The Nazi's came in force with tanks and machine guns, and you will see on the photo the slit that is the vent for the crypt. You can also see the marks of the ammunition.

  • Whilst they were being bombarded with gun fire, they tried to find the sewage drain the priest had told them about, they had as you will see in this photo started to try and dig.

  • The Nazi's tried to smoke them out and then put fire hoses in to flood the crypt. Some of the soldiers were shot dead and as the waters rose to the heads of the remaining 2 they shot themselves.
This crypt under the church is a memorial to those soldiers and also to the brave people of Prague who helped them, most of whom were captured and executed.
The poppy wreaths and messages are left by visitors to say thank you to those who died for our freedom.

  • What a huge open space this is, in fact it is purported to be the largest square in Europe. This used to be where the market was held until the beginning of the 20th century. Looking in any direction the architecture of the buildings is so beautiful.

  • This square seems to have seen battles and executions over the centuries.
This statue is of someone called Jan Hus. From what I can make out, Hus who was born in 1372 came from a poor family, went to Charles University and also later taught there. However because of the way the catholic church's bias he sort of drifted off their way and started preaching in a chapel called the Bethlehem Chapel, in the end he was executed in this square in 1415.

  • This building was founded in 1338 and is open to the public. There is an entrance fee of 30kc. Open each day, although check first for opening times, which in the winter are not as long. Not all rooms open to the public, but you can go in the chapel and also see the apostle figures (see astronomical clock tip).
You can even go up in the tower for a birds eye view for this there is an extra charge. There is also a lift.
On the photograph the Old Town Square is on the left hand side

  • Well I have never seen a clock like this one before! Can you believe it but after 600 years this clock still works. Its amazing.
Made in 1410 it has 4 figures at the side of the clock. They represent Vanity, Greed, Death and Pagan invasion. Before the hour the crowds gather as 'Death' rinhs his bell and the hourglass turns. In the opening above, the apostolic figures glide past.
This happens each hour between 9am - 9pm

  • This building which I thought was really nice, was once lived in by Franz Kafka when he was a child between 1889 and 1896. He was a writer and died in 1924. It is now owned by the Town Hall.
