Favorite Thing: There are bells which apparently still work in the tower of the post office pavilion, although I actually dont know whether they still get used or not. If you go up in the lift to the top of the observatory you wont see them, but have to walk up the stairs and you can them see them through a glass window.
The photo is a bit dark though.

Favorite Thing: This square was named after the Marquis de Lafayette. It was once where the rich had their mansions, including Henry Adams. Where his house was situated now stands a hotel called the Hay Adams Hotel and it is said that Colonal Oliver North obtained contributions for the Nicaraguan contras here.
Nearby is St. Johns church where there is a pew always reserved for the presidential family.
Fondest Memory: It was nice to visit DC and see such famous sites that you normally see on the tv, but it was also nice to meet up with vt member soccergrrl.

Favorite Thing: Here alongside Lafeyette Square in front of the White House is where people congregate to demonstrate.
These people want peace, sadly not everyone in the world does!

Favorite Thing: It was here in the basement that US currency used to be printed from 1863-1880.
Free tours were available, but I would check first.

Favorite Thing: This reflecting pool is 2,000 feet long and the reflections of the Lincoln Memorial on one end and the Washington Memorial on the other are both reflected here.
There are also lots of families of ducks :-)
Here in the year 2,000 building work started on a WWll memorial. This was still being carried out when we visited in July 2002 and also when my husband went in June 2002.

Favorite Thing: We have a tendancy to throw off our shoes and paddle our feet whenever we see some water! The Smithsonian Castle was no exception. Our Joe couldnt resist running through this small fountain while I paddled my feet under the water flowing from the bird baths situated in the grounds. The birds loved it and so did I :-)
