Monarch Airlines Planes / Trains Review

We flew with Monarch Scheduled from Manchester. Monarch fly 3 times a week from Manchester, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
You can get some cheap deals depending what dates you want.They no longer provide the inclusive meal though and the drinks. Competition with these airlines is so stiff that you are now having to pay £4.00 for the meal. Although it is usually a nice meal. Drinks are extra.

Monarch also fly there everyday from Luton, and British Airways also fly there each day from Gatwick.

Unfortunately Monarch are ending their flights to Gibraltar from July 2006 from Manchester airport. Something to do with landing costs. It maybe that some other airline may pick up this route. We will have to see.

Getting from the airport to Gibraltar, you can either get the bus, taxi (see my other tips) or walk. This involves walking across the airstrip and to the hotel where we stayed its approximately 20 minutes walk.

Rent a bike

A great way to get around Gibraltar and see the sites or even just to go into Spain is by motorcycle. Lots of motorcycles in Gibraltar and also easier for parking. Also when queuing to cross the border for Gibraltar into Spain or vice versa the scooters are always at the front! Making queuing time much less if the barrier is down for a plane landing.

Hire car Bus / Coach / Car Review

We hired a car for a few days whilst in Gibraltar not to get around Gibraltar itself but so we could visit a few places in Spain. Its cheaper to hire a car across the border than in Gibraltar itself. We hired on the internet from Crown Car Hire. You pick the car up across the border. As you walk through the customs at the border, head straight across the junction, McDonald is on the right hand side and just further along on the left hand side you will see an underground parking garage called Focona, this is where their office is and where you pick up and drop off your car. Its about 3 minutes walk from the border. We paid approximately £21 a day which included all insurances.
Buy your petrol/diesel on the Gibraltan side though as it is cheaper.
Petrol was 54p a litre
Diesel was 45p a litre

Also parking in Gibraltar isnt too good. Most hotels have some parking spaces for guests. At the Bristol they gave you a sticker to put in your car window in their designated parking spots.

Roadside parking is few and far between, but there are some large car parks on Line Wall Road, and also a multi storey car park near Casemates Square.

Bus / Coach / Car Review

There is a bus service to various parts on Gibraltar from outside the entrance to the airport building (on the Gibraltar side). The bus number is 10. If you buy a return ticket you save 25%.
Taxi's are plentiful as well on Gibraltar. From the airport to the hotel we stayed in it was about £6. But most journies on Gibraltar are approximately £4.00

In La Linea which is the Spanish town across the border you can catch buses daily to Malaga and Algeciras.
