The Algarve in southern Portugal has been invaded and fought over by the Phoenicians, Romans and Moors.

It has approximately 350,000 permanent in habitants but during the summer time when tourists invade this number can exceed 1,000.000

The old EN125 main road which runs along the coast has partially been renewed by a new dual carriageway. It starts at the Spanish border and stretches to the north of Albufeira which then links with the main road to Lisbon.

The Algarve has about 100 sandy beaches. Some can be busy, but it is possible to find nice secluded beaches. The sea is beautiful and temperatures can be quite warm even in the winter months.

Away from the coast are the foothills which lead to the highest point Foia which is 902 mts., above the village of Monchique. This mountain area is known for the layers of Roman terraces with granite stone walls. From this region also comes the locally brewed drink 'Medronho.

Dont sit on the same beach everyday, there is so much to see. Hire a car if possible (we didnt think much of the public transport) and explore this lovely region. This is Vilamoura a lovely place to visit, south of Albufeira.

Nice page. That's a strange rock sitting on the beach...it looks a bit out of place. I will reply as soon as I can. :-)
