Niort is a quiet town that deserves to be seen for its historic heritage (its donjon and churches). Its surroundings also have a very interesting historic as well as natural heritage (the Royal Abbey of Nieul or the marshes called the Marais Poitevin).
You can freely go to its feet, visit the inside for a small entry fee (I think it's best to choose a guided tour for 1 or 2€ more, but it's only available once a day - at 3 pm when I was there), learn about the history of the place but also see the art collections and exhibits that it hosts, and finally go on the roof to have a beautiful view over the town.
