Our Staycation

We took a week and decided on a 'staycation', chosing Wine Strand, Ballyferriter, Co. Kerry. Why did we chose here? Well, Ballyferriter has its own microbrewery - a pub called Tig Bhric. We like to do our own thing, so generally we go for Self Catering and we ended up with a lovely three bed cottage, with a kitchen that was almost better equipped than our own.

There seemed to be plenty of options with B&B's, Guesthouses and quite an attractive small hotel in Ballyferriter village itself

Weather & Walking

Weather in May 2011 was pretty mixed. In the sunshine, it was glorious; and when it rained, it didn't last long. With the exception of 1 day, we were able to get out and about, walking, cycling, and just generally enjoying all of it.

Walking is an absolute joy in the area, as is cycling. At the time we visited, the roads were pretty perfect. Car travellers locally are well used to people cycling and walking and so are really polite and patient. The scenary is stunning, each bend in the road brings something new and worthy to stop and admire.

Off road walking is well signposted and options are regular and often.

Food & Drink

Wine Strand is about 1 mile - 1.5 miles from Ballyferriter village. In our estimation, Tig Bhric is the only available eatery within safe walking distance. However, at the time of year we visited, they were only doing food up to 4pm. We understand this changes for the summer months, with evening meals being served.

We bought our groceries locally. There's a pretty good little supermarket in Ballyferriter, or Dingle is only 6 miles away if a better selection is required.

Given our proximity to a microbrewery, we rarely ventured further than there every evening. We also tried and supped a pint at a couple of the pubs in the village, but for sheer handiness and closeness to home, we ended up in Tig Bhris.
