Helsinki with its more than half a million citizens is the capital city of the Republic of Finland and it is situated on the Baltic Sea coast. In 2010 Helsinki turned 450 years and in 2000 it was one of the nine cultural capitals of Europe. Espoo, Vanta and Grankulla belong together with Helsinki to the capital city region with more than a million of people, living there.
Helsinki is unique among all cities in North Europe. It has always had influence both from the west and from the east.
Being 450 years of age, means that the architecture includes several stages and styles. The northern design has made Helsinki world popular.
Beautiful nature hand by hand with high technology, old traditions combine with the newest trends. Green parks in the center and the nearly located forests offer a wonderful environment for everyone, searching for silence and escape from stress and crowds. Helsingfors har en lagom avspänd puls men har ett rikt utbud på restauranger och nattliv.
Everything in a walking distance - Helsinki is a tourist city with human proportions.
I was very nice surprised that Helsinki is so green, has many forests and has even a beach area. People were friendly and polite; they were always there to guide you wherever you might have got lost. Everyone speaks English, so communication with locals is no problem. I was touched by the architecture - it is, after all, about colour and design. Don't expect to see the typical Viennese architectures with coloured three-stored buildings with lots of figures and gips elements, which sometimes are too ornate and "overdressed". In Helsinki, you will enjoy shape and innovative ideas, some people say Art Nouveau prevails; other people think Northern style prevails.
Being classified as country no 1 to live in, involves that Helsinki is quite expensive. Anyway, it does not mean that budget travellers are not welcome. If you buy and go shopping from supermarkets and go to restaurants in the neighbourhoods, you will find your way in Helsinki.
Helsinki city museum is free of charge, so you will have the opportunity to learn about Finland dramatic history.
Suomenlinna is a wonderful option to spend an afternoon. It has played a vital part in Finland's history and Russians could not conquer it for the first time. The island is occupied mainly by a military fortress. Today, there are people who live there.
I should mention that here I found a four-leaf-clover
- Pros:beautiful, unique, clean, northern spirit, green
- Cons:expensive and somewhat cold
