Got up very early to drive to Lihue airport to catch the 8.00am plane to Honolulu, [this was like catching the number 10 bus at home, everyone knew each other]the flight only took 20 minutes, the coffee they gave us we didn't have time to drink.
Once we landed we found the hire car. First stop was the Arizona memorial at Pearl harbour, this was a very moving experience. we were first shown a film of original footage, then we caught a launch out to the Arizona,amazingly there is still oil leaking from the ship. it is so sad to think of all those young men dying in such a way.
next stop was Waikiki Beach, what a place this was nothing like I imagined it to be [I've been watching too many Hawaii Five O and Magnum programmes] the beach was fairly crowded, lots of surfers we even saw an outrigger.It was so hot that day, so of course we had to have a paddle.
We then found somewhere to eat i cannot remember the name of the place, but they sold burgers and lots of other food including Chillie chips, which if you had them you never had room for anything else.
The shops were wonderful you can buy anything there. we bought a few things including some original Hawaiian shirts for the lads back home.
Next we drove around part of the island, Diamond Head an old crater, now a national park, to another Spouting Horn,the views all along were spectcular.
soon it was time to make our way back to the airport and our flight back to Kauai, what a day it was great!!!
