Hebden Bridge Travel Guide: 48 reviews and 257 photos
Hebden Brigde originated from Heptonstall, a Pennine village nearby, and the town was established where a packhourse route travelled through the Pennines from Halifax to Burnley. The packhouse crossed Hebden water via the old bridge and this is where Hebden Bridge got it's name.
Hebden Bridge was developed during the 19th and early 20th century as it became renowned for its wool trade and clothing manufacturing and this was consolidated with transport links being built such as the railway and the Rochdale Canal.
The industries went in decline but from the 1970s, the town attracted artists, writers, alternative practitioners, green and new age activities. The influences are reflected in the organic, vegetarian and Fair Trade Cafes (Hebden Bridge received it's Fair Trade status in 2003) and also a number of retro and hippy shops. The town encourages sustainability with its eco-policies such as the banning of plastic bags in many shops and there is the Hebden Bridge Alternative Technology Centre.
Many people are attracted to living in Hebden Bridge because it's near other towns and major cities in three counties and makes it attractive for commuting.
Hebden Bridge attracts so many tourists and has so much to see and do. I thoroughly enjoy my days out in this Pennine Town.
During the Halifax VT Meet, in September 2012, we visited Cragg Vale, near Hebden Bridge, to visit the Little Valley Brewery (Please see tip for further information).
During the same month I was in Hebden Bridge where I visited National Trust's Hardcastle Craggs and Gibson Mill (Please see my tip)
A week later I returned! This time to walk around Widdop Reservoir (please see my tip) and visited the Old Town (please see my tip). It was a beautiful day and the Calderdale scenery is beautiful!
- Pros:A Feel Good Pennine Town with so much to see and do!
- Cons:It can get very busy especially during the holidays! Prone to floods!
- In a nutshell:A town that is still thriving after the industrial past!
