Kakegawa Kachoen

Bird Shows at Kakegawa Kachoen

Secretary birds are terrestrial birds of prey known by their unique ways of hunting snakes. At Kakegawa Kachoen there are bird shows featuring a rock eagle-owl, a hawk and a secretary bird which shows how it knocks unconscious snakes before eating. Secretary birds are not easy to train and in Japan it is only Kakegawa and Kobe Kachoen that have secretary bird shows. You can also see them at Ueno Zoo as well.

Kakegawa Castle and Downtown Area
Granted that Kakegawa is best known by the castle, but downtown area in Kakegawa has some other nice places to visit.

The manshion of the wealthy merchant built in Meiji-Period. The house is basically built in samurai residence style but added some modern styles of Meiji and Taisho period.

Tenryu-Hamanako Line

Tenryu-Hamanako Line starting from Kakegawa is a slow train often outrun by the cars running closeby. Yet it is a useful train for tourists because this rural train line covers a lot of tourists' destinations around Kakegawa and Hamamatsu. Most of the train stations of Tenryu Hamanako line are unmanned so when you get off at such stations remember to hand the ticket to the train conductor before getting off. When you get on the train from unmanned station, then pick up the slip of paper with numbers at the back side of the train and when you get off prepare the train fee according to the electrical board of the train just like that of buses.

Hiking In Mt. Ogasayama

Mt. Ogasayama may not be what you call a mountain. It is only 265 meters above sea level. But this place is rich in plants and wild birds rare around this area. If you love earth science it could be the good place to see the stratas. The mountaintop area is a place where Iyeyasu Tokugawa made a fortress to fight against Takeda clan. From one of the peak area Kakegawa castle can be seen from the distance. It is very difficult to find a castle in the naked eye though. Walking along a hiking trail is really thrilling. You may have to walk on the narrow ridge with both sides drop to the ravine. And you may have to pass the dark tunnels to get around the pond. There are a number of hideouts for the birdwatchers to get close to the birds undetected.

Other Great Places
There are great places other than Kakegawa castle and Mt. Ogasayama. Kachoen is a popular attraction with botanical garden and avian zoos. Tsumagoi is another great amusement park where you can enjoy a lot of interesting attractions. Awagatake is the most popular hiking destination for Kakegawa residents. Yokosuka old town has some historical places including Shimizu House with nice garden and Yokosuka Castle Ruins. In the coastal area, there is a nice day-trip onsen Daito Onsen Seatopia and close to the onsen there is a nice beach of Enshunada a part of Pacific Ocean.
Yokosuka Old Town
If you like Kakegawa castle area, you will definitely love this town. This town has been developed under the governership of Yokosuka Clan. Around Yokosuka Castle Ruins there are a number of old houses and temples.

Kigugawa Area
Kikugawa is a neighboring town of Kakegawa having some historical sites.
Old Samurai Residence(Bukeyasiki) is one of the most well known Kikugawa attraction, also there is a nice old castle ruin, Yokoji Castle.
