Where is Nissaka?

Nissaka is in the eastern edge of Kakegawa and is best known as the twenty-fifth lodging station of Tokaido Highway, between Kakegawa and Kanaya. It is often associated with Sayo-No-Nakayama the hill area between Kanaya and Nissaka. Sayon-no-Nakayama is known as one of the three difficult places in Tokaido Road along with Hakone, Suzuka Pass. Nissaka area is now a small-town area but old houses still remain and some of the houses welcome tourists.

Nissaka during mid 19th Century

Hiroshige Ando's ukiyoe paintings often show the Sayo-no-Nakayama area as representative place for Nissaka. Sayo-no-Nakayama, best known by the Night-weeping stone(Yonaki-Ishi) legend, is not only hard place of Tokaido trail but as known as an outlook place viewing the mountains nearby. Lots of poems have been made for this scenic spot. It is great place for hikers indeed. While you have to face heavy traffic in most of the Tokaido Trails, Sayo-no-Nakayama has little traffic so you can really enjoy peaceful, quiet walks. As the Hiroshige's Ukiyoe woodblock print of Nissaka shows Night Weeping Stone used to have been right on the middle of the road. Today there are two stones which are said to be the one on the Tokaido road. I do not know for sure why there are two Night Weeping stones.

Nissaka, In 2011

Nissaka, known as the 25th Tokaido station, is now a small town in the eastern part of Kakegawa left alone from urban development. Ironically this is the main reason why old houses are left nearly intact. Nissaka has three old houses open to public and any of these houses are free of charge. It also has a kosatsu, or wooden bulletin board for public announcements becoming rarer in old lodging stations. Kotonomama Hachimangu surrounded by lush green forest is a nice place to start Sayono Nakayama trail one of the most popular segments of Tokaido hike.
