Mount Takakusa Hike

#Utsunoya, Mariko and Takumi-shuku area will be covered in detail in "Mariko" page which is yet to be on VT database.

On October 21, I climbed Mount Takakusa for the first time in 30 years. I often climbed that mountain during my high school days as a training for summer hike of the club I belonged. But the course from Miwa area has not been tried. The photo is Tokiishi or Time Rock so named that the rock shows noontime by the sunlight on the top part of the rock. It was taken at 0:43 p.m. that day.

Other popular hiking destinations from Okabe are:
Dairabou, 561m above sea level: Popular for paraglider fans.
Youtube Video on Dairabou:
Paragliding from the summit of Dairabou(Japanese language)
Bikuishi, 524m above sea level: 1 1/2 -2-hour climb from Gyokuro-no-Sato.

#17 Tsutano Hosomichi Hike

Okabe is the mountaneous and rustic area known as 21st lodging station of Tokaido Highway. It is located between Shizuoka, Yaizu and Fujieda. Okabe town merged into Fujieda in 2009 but to me it is still a neighboring town full of unknowns. About half of Fujieda's twenty hiking courses belong to former Okabe town.

#17 Hiking Trail of Fujieda is called Tsutano Hosomichi hike. It is also one of the major hiking courses of Shizuoka city as well. Tsutano Hosomichi used to be the official highway linking Kyoto and the eastern part of Japan from around 8th to 16th century. The place was referred to as the place dark and generating lonely feeling by Narihira Ariwara noted poet in 9th century and it was also said that burglars lurked in the mountains preying for poor travelers. Okabe side starts from stone pavement and you will see a huge rock called Nekoishi or cat rock which does not look like a cat at all. (Some scholars speculate this rock as the god-descending rock, or Iwakura used by Shugendo worshippers). Utsunoya Pass area is a nice place for mountain views while that of Tokaido is really desolate. Utsunoya pass of Tsutano Hosomichi is about 600 meters east of that of Tokaido. I am not so sure if we can trace along the ridge to get to the other trail.

Also see my Shizuoka and Fujieda page.

#20 Satoyama Trail
Satoyama trail is #20 offiicial hiking trail of Fujieda. It is an easy
trail fit for family hike and has good views. The trail starts at a park where Gochinyorai Statues and tourist information office are located. One of the frequently asked questions on Okabe shuku might be on how come there are two sets of statues. After finishing the trail I enjoyed the riverside walk along Asahinagawa river and visited Grand Inn Kashibaya the biggest draw of the Okabe Shuku, 21st lodging station of Tokaido.

#19 Yamanobe Trail

Yamanobeno-Michi is the official hiking trail(#019) of Fujieda. It starts from an ancient shrine Miwa Shrine, named and styled as Miwa Shrine in Nara. This shirine is also an climbing gate of Mt. Takakusa, 501m, the sacred mountain according to this shrine. The trail visits nice temples and shrines. One of the well-known place can be Joshoin Temple commonly referred to as Heitaiji or "The Temple of Soldiers".

You can also enjoy hiking there. Popular hiking destinations from Okabe include Mount Takakusa,501m, Bikuishi,524m, and Dairabou,568m. My next Okabe trip will explore either of them.
