Jissoji Temple
Once Prosperous Area northwest of Hamamatsu

Okuyama area is mountainous area, formerly Inasa town. The area used to be popular tourist areas of suburban Hamamatsu with historical sites, caves, old temples, hiking courses and even an amusement park. Ryotanji temple, Ryugashido cave, and Hokoji temple in particular are the core sites attracting huge number of tourists. With urban development of central Hamamatsu areas, new attractive facilities, former top tourist sites are now facing uphill battle.

Historically, the area north of Hamamatsu and Lake Hamana had been prosperous areas at least before early 17th century when Tokaido highway taking costal routes was established by Tokugawa government. Former highway taking northern course was reduced to the status of alternate highway often referred to as "Himekaido". If you like historical towns like Kyoto or Nara, these suburban northern old highway area are worth checking into. Today, these areas are named as Kita-ku of Hamamatsu city.
