The Sago Palm Tree of Hiroshige's Akasaka

Akasaka-shuku located at the westernmost part of Toyokawa is the place where you can see the things painted by Hiroshige's wood-block painting such as Sago Palm tree of Ohashiya. When Hiroshige painted this plant of prosperity, the cycad was still young. More than one and a half centuries later, the sago palm has grown to such as you can see the photo above. The cycad tree was moved from Ohashiya to Josenji Temple. According to Josenji Temple, however, the cycads in the temple were actually moved from Kiyosuya Inn which closed inn business long time ago. It is believed that because cycads need metals to grow they use up the money(in Japanese the word Kane has dual connotation, metals and money). Some historians argue that Hiroshie borrowed cycads planted in other Inn to finish his painting.

Saimyoji Temple, Garden and its German Connection

Saimyoji Temple is located near the divide for Himekaido between Old Tokaido Stop Goyu(#35) and Yoshida(#34). It is best known for the monument of Erwin Balz(Baelz) a German physician who served for Japanese Imperial Family during late 19th century. The temple is also known for its beautiful landscape garden.

Ohashiya, the last Surviving Old Tokaido Inn

Although Toyokawa Inari is never along the Old Tokaido Road, it is alongside the old highway nicknamed as Himekaido. In fact Himekaido running through the central part of Toyokawa used to be the main highway leading to Akiha Shrine in Hamamatsu before newer Tokaido Highway took over as an official highway. Goyu-shuku of Old Tokaido thrived because it was the start of pilgrimmage highway leading both Toyokawa Inari, Akiha Shrine and a number of old temples and shrines such as Okuni Shrine in Mori. Akasaka is another post station west of Goyu, and both stations are really close, only about a mile apart. Akasaka boasts the only inn in Old Tokaido Stations still running today, Ohashiya.
