Cloud End Forest Resort: Mussoorie Sanctuary

The ‘Cloud End Forest Resort’, in the Landour region of Mussoorie, is for serious people – people serious about their peace, tranquillity, privacy, nature and rejuvenation. Located a good 7 kms from the Mall, it is secluded enough even for the most private of persons. If you are travelling in your own vehicle, take the diversion to your left, 4 kms before reaching Mussoorie. A signboard tells you that this haven is 13 kms away. This is a lonely stretch of road with no proper signboards (Cart Mackenzie Road) 10 kms up to Hathi Paon (7,080 ft.). From this landmark it’s another 3 kms. Taking this bypass allows you to avoid the madness of the traffic of Library Point to Waverly Convent and thence to this secluded spot. Here’s a video: VirtualTourist.

Situated almost 7000 feet above MSL, this rambling bungalow is almost in the centre of 2,000 acres of forest land. This ensures plenty of flora and fauna for the nature lover. The building was constructed by one Major Edmund Swetenham, Commandant of the Invalids in 1838 and “is one of the oldest and the last building, retaining its original architectural design and ambience”, according to the Resort’s literature.

With a total of 14 rooms on offer, this is a place meant for serious rest and recuperation. Room number 1 is a heritage deluxe room while rooms 2 and 3 as well as 4 and 5 are family suites. The rest of the rooms are in the new block. Also, camp huts are available for the intrepid traveller. Toilets are large with running hot and cold water.

All the rooms in the old block are big and complete with antique furniture. Spacious and airy, these rooms form part and parcel of a regular house – with its own drawback. If you are unlucky to have bawling children and/or loud guests in the next room, you’ll have to take out your cotton pads, or increase the volume of your TV set/music system.

Food is a major plus point. Not only is it freshly cooked but it is like true home-made food. And the menu is pretty exhaustive with a section devoted to Continental fare. The service is personalised, courteous and accommodating. Also, other services like horses and guides are available at payment. Finally, in case you have brought along a driver, separate accommodation is available at a very nominal cost.
