Crumbling ochre facades enshrouded in scaffolding, carbon-monoxide-spewing Skodas, ancient trams and unreconstructed communist era hotels, Olomouc is the city that tourism forgot. Enter a self-service samosloozba cafeteria and point to the potato, sausage or cabbage specialty of your liking, down it beer and aluminum utensils. Elegant baroque domes, Gothic vaulting, Renaissance gables lined with cobblestones and streetcar tracks, Olomouc has everything, except investment. Way out in north eastern Moravia and off the Interrail radar, Olomouc is a pearl of Habsburg-era cultural achievement.
Who needs Prague, anyway?
