The cafes, hotels, gas stations, and restaurants of the Istrian peninsula are as parched for tourists as the province is for cash. The war has frightened everyone off, but never came close to Istria. The rest areas are intourist chic, just the state system. Everywhere are displayed posters of the great Franjo Tudjman, liberator of Vukovar, savior of the Nation, and former top party apparatchik in Belgrade. All along the route to Umag and Porez, lie unfinished luxury village projects, strapped for cash, obviously. The shops are a little disheveled too, their signs colored with cheap, Warsaw pact sourced plastics, The crisp red and yellow road signs at least, follow the western model. Pass a great ravine We have to circumnavigate a fjord, and succumbing to the hypnotic effect of the scenery, fall asleep. When the bus stops we are outside of a great Roman Ampitheater, Pula.
