I expected Split to be crawling with western tourists and low prices but neither proved to be true. The bus station was full of matrons in black offering rooms for lodgers. One of them uttered the magic words "room in center" and I took the bait. A friendly couple of English speakers saved me from the chaos. "How much?" I asked. "100 kuna a night." Too much. "well, if you stay for three nights it's only 80 a night." This room turns out to be positioned right above the promenade in the center of Split. It's got a shower, a sink, two beds and a WC, with an absolutely vast porch taking in a panoramic view of the harbor, palm trees, and the Adriatic. Not bad, for Friday the thirteenth.
