Kurama

Kurama is a little village north of Kyoto city. To get there one has to take a 30 minute ride with a little train called cable car along a scenic route through the forest. There are day tickets sold at discounted rates from Osaka and other major cities. One can find them at stores in major stations that sell Pitapa. Best to ask at a tourist information center.

Tengu

The shrine at Kurama is dedicated to Tengu the red faced goblins with the big nose. At least that is how they are usually depicted.

An easy but pleasant hike

You do break some sweat but the hike is very easy with many resting points thanks to a number of minor shrines and temples along the way. Best to get there by train rather than car as you can catch the train back from Kibune 貴船 at the end of the hike, otherwise if you are by car you will have to hike back.
