3000 years of culture on Guatemala's Pacific coast

Long before the florecence of high Maya civilization the ancient dwellers of Izapa. Mexico just over the border from El Baul, Guatemala established the traditional Long Count Maya Calendar tradition inspired by the high civilization of the preceding Olmecs. They used hieroglyphic writing to express hierarchical development and enormous periods of mythic time. Accross the border in Guatemala the Izapan culture influenced the emerging cultures of local city-states allowing for the spread of the high culture and igniting the pre-classic traditon that would eventually lead to the glories of the future Maya kingdoms. Here at El Baul the ancestors of the classic Mayas left beautiful monuments attesting to this process.

Jaguars rule the spirit realm

The Izapans and their followers at El Baul inherited the Olmec veneration for the spirit of this tropical jungle cat.
