***As I write this, I am still in shock over the events of September 11, 2001. I'm honestly not sure what to think about everything that's happened in New York for the past few days. The fire station across from my office has posted a funeral schedule of the known deaths of the firefighters that were lost when the World Trade Center towers collapsed as they were searching for survivors. I've had the painful sight of the Manhattan skyline from my mother's home and am still overcome with grief. We are all affected by this. Not only New Yorkers or Americans, but all of us. Just a thought to all though: as we learned of the first plane crashing into the WTC, we all rallied around our Arab American co-worker who has a son who works in the WTC. Thankfully, his son was taking care of some business at home and was heading to work later than usual and is okay. New Yorkers, so far, have been exemplary in our rallying together and doing what needs to be done. I hope we all remember through our pain that terrorists that they suspect are not representative of all Muslims or Arabs. I worry for my Muslim and Arab American friends and hope that we can get through this together without resorting to hatred and vigilante justice. I pray for the families and friends of the victims and for all New Yorkers who lived through this surreal and tragic experience.*** New York City--they've written songs about it and made movies about it. There's a lot more to this great city than the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. New York is about diversity. I think the term used is "salad bowl"--where there are lots of different ingredients that all mix together, but retain their specific flavor! That is the essence of New York so, when you go to the Met, take in a play at BAM, when you check out a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, don't forget to see the Yankees up in the Bronx. Enjoy all of New York--we're not just one island! Some good sites to check for info are: New York CitySearch</a The Village Voice</a TimeOut New York</a New York Info</a New York Times</a and there are tons more.
If you're looking for an apartment in NYC, well, um, good luck! Actually, it's not impossible. Some good sites to check classifieds for less expensive places--you may have to hit other boroughs for this--are the following (local community papers are good, but hard to get a hold of if you're not in NYC): New York Loot</a New York Daily News</a The Village Voice</a NY Post</a NY Times</a and check the Citysearch site for any links to realtors. Seriously, it's a dog eat dog world here so good luck!!
If you've seen this page before, you will notice that I have finally added some photos and as I find/take some more, I'll keep adding them. In the meantime, enjoy my walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. I will try to capture some more photos of my NYC to share soon.
Check out my travelogues for more detailed info about each of the boroughs! |
