This place is mind-blowing! It is a mixture of extreme poverty and extreme beauty. If you are interested in a very different experience, by all means, Haiti is the place to be. This is a view of Port-au-Prince from a development site up in the mountains.
As you are probably aware, Haiti is a country stricken with poverty and they are still in recovery from many dark years under Papa Doc (Duvalier). Many Haitians refer to any non-Haitians (and this includes African Americans) as "blanc." Don't be offended and treat the Haitians with respect and friendliness--they'll do the same to you. At the same time, you being a blanc also means you are wealthy (compared to them, most of us are) and separating you from some of your wealth is natural. Take care, but don't be paranoid and you'll be fine.
