Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, which is the other half of the island of Hispaniola (the other half is Haiti) and a Spanish speaking country, Dominica is a lush and beautiful island that is like no other island in the Caribbean. Nestled between the French departments of Guadeloupe and Martinique, Dominica is a former British colony that betrays its proximity to French influenced countries--through its version of Patois and its creole food.
If you're looking for an idle beach vacation, this is probably not the best island to choose, but if you are interested in an adventure and the chance to meet some of the friendliest people in the West Indies, this is the island for you. Dominica is known as the place for ecotourists, but, even if you are not an ecotourist and just want a memorable vacation, this is the place to go.
