Distrito de Leiria Travel Guide: 1,095 reviews and 3,460 photos

Medieval monasteries, battlefields, pilgrimage site, fishing towns, charming villages, fortresses, castles, caves, and yes, dinosaur footprints, dozens of them, and so much more -- a veritable treasure trove for travellers of all inclinations --- all to be found in an area of just 3,500 square kilometers which compose the district of Leiria. Not surprisingly, Leiria boasts of two UNESCO heritage sites, the monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça, including one in the tentative list (the dinosaur footprints), and places of national cultural significance.

The most important battles in the country's history were fought here, hence, the monasteries which were built to commemorate the Portuguese victories: Alcobaça for the victory over the Moors, and Batalha for the victory over the Castilians.

The Caves of Mira de Aire sound interesting, and you have nice photo's of them too, something I find difficult to do in caves. The whole area sounds nice, thanks for sharing.
