San Jose to the West!

Flew into San Jose from Atlanta with no problems. Taxi to the hotel Ritzli was $25 and it was a small but nice room with 2 beds and a small bathroom with shower. We walked around the city for a bit having coffee at the National Theater's cafe as recommended by lots of reviewers on the internet--gorgeous building and garden setting. The next day we got a taxi to the smaller Tobias Bolanos airport for our Nature Air flight to Tambor, where we easily got a taxi from there to our house in Malpais, costing $50 for the trip and taking about 40 minutes, arriving too late for sunset but Silvi's small Soda restaurant was on the same cove as our house, so we walked in the dark around the beach and had some fresh fish, rice and beans and plantains. Slept well falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and the wind.

Mal Pais Livin

Our house in Mal Pais was a little south of the Crossroads intersection, away from most of the driving/dusty roads (thank goodness). Of all the tips (that we did not use!) that I would definitely recommend is for folks to take goggles to the area to wear when walking or ATV-ing around. We did not and were constantly wiping the grit out of our eyes. We had an octagon house with bedroom upstairs, kitchen, eating area and large living area downstairs, and tons of outdoor seating and lounging areas on the path out to the beach area. We had more rocks and tide pools than beach right in front of the house, but found a fairly nice inlet to swim close by. There are lots of dogs in the area, so bring ear plugs if they bother you late at night or in the early morning. Howler monkeys, Iguanas, and once a large Coati walk through the property often and we got great photos when we had our cameras at hand! Also lots of parrots and hummingbirds which were too quick (for us) to take pix....

ATV rental is a MUST!

We rented a quad ATV for 2 days so we could access some of the further restaurants and harder to reach areas and was well worth it---cost was $130 for a 48 hour period (total $148 when we turned it in with only 1/4 tank left). A few hotels up on the hillside are hard to reach without one, and we also went northward to explore the lesser known beaches up there, such as Playa Hermosa. Not hard to figure out the driving, but some of those cliffside places are straight up the hill---lean forward when on these roads so you dont fall over backwards! All in all, a very nice, secluded, out of the way vacation for those who want a beach experience away from the all inclusive set---I heartily recommend VRBO.com and the house owners who use it.
