"Saint Georges South" Corfu Island by Tracyden

We (my and husband) stayed at St Georges south just for a weekend. I hadn't realised that you could travel to a greek island for such a short stay and I don't think you usually can outside of the beginning the the very end of the season.

Corfu had previously only been a stop of experience for us - spending a few hours before sunrise at a cafe in Corfu Town harbour waiting for the boats to start running to our favourite greek destination (so far). Corfu town looked great but we never had the chance to explore on these occasions and likewise we didn't on this break - maybe one day.

We stayed self catering at a scruffy but adequate apartment hotel with a pool that was too cold to use so early in the season - the room was in need of some repairs and updating - check out the groovy tiles man!

We arrive in St Georges at the very start of the season - the resort consisted of just one main road with lots of little bars and restaurants stretched along this - at least fifty per cent of these were still closed for business, but extremely busy little hive of activities - owners were performing maintainance and sprucing up the paintwork in anticipation of a busy tourist season.

As we walked along the street each day - all of two days - we were pleasantly surprised by the enthusiastic greetings of the locals - all looking shocked at how short our stay was. Special mention to George who rents out the Quad bikes. One of the locals has a dog who enjoyed walking along the road the the beach with the tourists.

The beach is a huge expanse of sand at the very bottom of the resort main road. We were lucky with the weather - as it can be cold and rainy at the beginning of May and indeed by greek standards it was still chilly - the locals were all still wearing their anoraks - we spent most of our short break on the beach.

There is a large all inclusive hotel on the beach with their own loungers but no one appeared to care when we illegally allocated outselves two and got on with the serious business of reading our holiday fiction.

Unfortunately our trip vey quickly came to an end and we shared our transfer back to corfu airport in a small minubus with some all inclusive hotel guests who smelt and sang as if they had been using there free booze entitlement up to the last minute. Unbreak my Heart will always remind me of corfu and stale lager.

Our trip home was on a very empty plain - only 29 passengers - but not as empty as the flight from corfu to birmingham which consisted of one elderly lady who was loving the personal service!
