Architecture: Christchurch Anglican...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Christchurch Anglican Cathedral situated in Cathedral Square. It is possible to go inside this Gothic Cathedral and climb the spire to get a magnificent view over Christchurch City. The Cathedral's spire rises to a height of 64 m and is visible from most parts of the city.

Fondest Memory: I enjoy the wide open spaces and short distances to the seaside or countryside.

    Hagley Park: Botanical Gardens
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: When the first settlers from England arrived at Lyttelton in 1850, they brought with them the gardening traditions of that country. It was just 13 years after their arrival that the initial plans were made to form the present Botanical Gardens.
On 9th July 1863, the first tree was planted in the grounds to comemmorate the marriage of Prince Albert Edward to Princess Alexandra of Denmark. This tree, an English Oak , recorded as the Albert Edward Oak, is regarded as the foundation date of the Government Domain, later to become the Botanical Gardens.
Controls of the Botanical Gardens was until 1946 vested in the Chch Domains Board, but due to the financial difficulties the govt dissolved the Board and placed control and funding under the jurisdiction of the Chch City Council, the dept of Parks and Recreation having responsibility for day to day management.

Fondest Memory: William Moorhouse, statue, is surrounded by seasonal flower beds. Mr. Moorhouse is responsible for the tunnel through the port hills linking the port of Lyttleton to the city of Christchurch.

Freezing conditions.. Antarctic Centre: Freezing conditions.. Antarctic Centre
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: The Visitor Centre International Antarctic Centre allows you to experience real Antarctic conditions with Audiovisual and Touch Screen technology. Feel "genuine" Antarctic wind chill or slide down a snow slope in the real Snow & Ice Experience. You can even dress up in real Antarctic Clothing and see live fish and sea spiders from Antarctica!

Fondest Memory: Try the new Antarctic Hägglund Ride, a 'Behind the Scenes' tour of Christchurch's Antarctic Campus. During the ride passengers visit the US Antarctic Programme's Clothing Warehouse, Antarctic Departure Terminal and see the Antarctic Aircraft Apron. They then take visitors over an adventure course to experience the amazing all-terrain abilities of the Hägglund. Dare to drive over the 'Crevasse' and watch in amazement as it swims through water! Bookings for the ride are recommended
