Getting TO/AROUND: After our week in Boston we travelled to Montpelier in Vermont by bus. Later we returned direct to Logan Airport from Montpelier also by bus. We had no problems either way. The bus was comfortable, the drivers were helpful, and the bus was only half full each way (slightly fuller on the return) so you could get up and move about and even change seats if you wanted. The bus stops for about 20-30 minutes at White River Junction for refuelling etc. I was quite happy with the journey but then I'm a seasoned public transport user.
You catch the bus from the Greyhound Bus Station which is over part of the Boston South Railway Station and the journey to Montpelier is scheduled (including the stop I mentioned above) to last 4hrs 5 minutes and on our outward journey was on time all the way. Our return journey started nearly 1 hour late, but we were kept well informed by the local office at Montpelier (remember the bus is coming from Canada). The break at White River Junction was reduced to 10 to 15 minutes and we arrived at Logan only about 10 to 15 minutes late.

Getting TO/AROUND: When we arrived at Logan we caught the Shuttle Bus to the Airport Station on the Blue Line of the subway or The T. The shuttle takes about 5 minutes. The T takes about 9 minutes to get from the Airport Station to the Government Centre in downtown Boston. The station has been rebuilt and was opened on 3rd June 2004. The photo was taken only 4 months before I went to Boston and is from the Wikipedia Internet site. When we got to the Airport Station we found the staff very helpful to people like us who are total strangers to the T, helping us get our ticket from the automatic machines.

Getting TO/AROUND: Tucked away, and almost out of sight of the public, is this panel of 3 blown up photographs. The Green Line is the oldest line in Boston and the oldest in America. My website link is to a site on the history of the Green Line.

Getting TO/AROUND: In January 1842 Charles Dickens came to Boston and in the last few days, in February, before he moved on to Pennsyvania, he was invited by Lowell to visit Lowell's cotton mills. In Chapter 4 of his book "American Notes", which he published later that year, he described the rail journey from Boston to Lowell. The orginal line to Lowell was built by the Boston and Lowell Railroad on granite blocks - it shook the engines and carriages so much and was such an uncomfortable ride that shortly before Dickens arrived the track had been relaid on wooden sleepers. When I made the trip to Lowell I felt I was reliving an 1842 journey.

Glad you had such a good time in Boston -- and that as a "seasoned public transport user" you were even happy with the bus service.

Interesting. I'm planning to visit Boston next year. Greets.
