"A very good place to be a gannet!" Lambert's Bay by CatherineReichardt

Lambert's Bay Travel Guide: 16 reviews and 29 photos

(work in progress)
Lambert's Bay's main claim to fame is that it is one of only six breeding colonies worldwide for the Cape gannet, and by far the most accessible, being linked to the harbour by a short causeway.

However, Wikipedia also provides the following useful definition: "The gannet's supposed capacity for eating large quantities of fish has led to "gannet" becoming a disapproving description of somebody who eats excessively, similar to "glutton"." This is particularly pertinent given that Lambert's Bay is the crayfish (rock lobster) capital of South Africa and an absolute Mecca for seafood lovers!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:A typical West Coast town, with lots of interesting things to do for tourists of all ages
  • Cons:High unemployment means a disproportionate number of beggars and unsolicited car washers
  • In a nutshell:The way the West Coast used to be before the masses discovered it!
