A Macedonian Beauty

Matka lake and canyon are quite near the capital Skopje. It is an easy to reach oasis, perfect for a break from city life. There are numerous paths for walking, as well as lovely old monasteries in the canyon and wonderful rocks for climbing. Members of the Alpine Club Matka from Skopje, as well as climbers from all over Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and other neighbouring countries regularly come there to practice.

From the monastery of St Nikola Shishevski, a path leads to the top of a rock hill, from which you can see the canyon and the cafes from the above picture, next to which is another monastery, dedicated to St. Andrew.

Great personal picture on top of that hill! Matka is one of my favorite places in Macedonia! Cheers, Dennis
