When I went here for the first time on february 2005 , it was cold, there was lot of snow but it gave a lot of charm to the city.
HAKODATE is located south of HOKkAIDO and it's the third biggest city.
It was one of the first JAPAN's city whose port was opened to the foreign trade after a long period of isolationism in JAPAN.
HAKODATE also played an important role in the " BOSHIN WAR" (civil war in JAPAN between the forces of the TOKUGAWA shogunate and the Imperial court).
As JAPAN'S first port of international trade, the city was in contact with foreign cultures, some countries (USA, BRITAIN,RUSSIA...) etablished their consulates and several western building and churches were built (motomachi area).
Fishery is the main industry in KAKODATE, and especially squid of hakodate is famous.
