Falklands Stamps - Falkland Islands

Falklands Stamps

Stamp Collecting

What to buy: The most collectible Falkland Islands items would have to be their stamps, new stamps are introduced periodically and older issues are still available as are first day covers. Stamps and first day covers are available from the post office in Stanley and at Mount Pleasant Airfield, older first day covers can be purchased from various gift shops in Stanley.

For more details on collecting Falkland Islands stamps check the Falkland Islands Philatelic Bureau website quoted below.

What to pay: New first day covers are available from £3.00 upwards.

The Pink Shop - Falkland Islands

The Pink Shop

The Pink Shop: The Harrods of the Falklands?

Well that is what it has been compared to! There are many little shops in Stanley all selling various goods from cuddly penguins to T-shirts but there is only one shop where you can get those PLUS .. maybe a Swiss Army knife, or a print of a local scene, locally made knitwear, music books, local diddle-dee jam, postcards, guide books, posters, rucksacks or how about a kazoo?! The Pink Shop has got the lot!

What to buy: It's hard to find local made produce especially if you are after souvenirs to take home. Bear in mind that the total population of these islands (not including the British military and support) is under 3000. How many towns do you know of that kind of population make their own souvenirs? So don't get upset if that cuddly penguin you have just bought was actually made in China. However .. you CAN get locally made cuddly penguins at the Pink Shop .. just ask to see the "Baby Kelper" penguins. They also sell a decent range of locally made knitwear, hats, scarves and jumpers.

Falklands Sweater - Falkland Islands

Falklands Sweater

Knitwear

What to buy: Wherever you go in the world, wherever it gets cold and windy you will surely find a local knitwear industry. Whether it be Norway, Iceland, Shetland Islands, Channel Islands .. they all have their own particular style of sweater or jumper. The Falkland Islands has been producing knitwear for many years and why not as they produce some of the finest wool in the world. Falklands sweaters are not as well known as say Shetland or Fair Isle but they are much more unique .. how many people can say they own a genuine Falkland Islands jumper? I can! Falklands knitwear is very good value compared to other more well known knitwear.

What to pay: For a machine knitted sweater espect to pay approx £48.00 sterling, for hand knitted expect to pay roughly 40% more. That is STILL a lot cheaper than Shetland, Faroe Islands, fair Isle knitwear.
