South Atlantic Rocks | BBC's Atlantic Relay Station, Ascension Island |
OK hands up all those who can point to Ascension on a map! Top marks for those of you who can. Hands up all those who have been there, not many I'd vouch. Well there's a good reason as to why not many people have been there, this is because it is so far from anywhere else (find it in the world atlas and see for yourself). It is an important island however, communication-wise it serves as a satellite relay base, it is an important halfway refuelling base between the Falklands and the UK. Wide Awake airfield has one of the longest runways in the world and serves as an emergency landing base should the space shuttles need one (although quite how they'd manage to locate Ascension is anybody's guess!) It is also where I spent a week in June 2001 .. for under £50 (you read that correctly) .. one of the perks of serving in the Falkland Islands. |
