A century ago it is reckoned there were 100,000 tigers in the world, today that figure stands at between 4500 to 7000. It is a tragedy that such a magnificent creature appears to be on the brink of extinction, driven ever closer to the edge each day by habitat destruction, prey depletion and poaching for it's skin and body parts (which are used in traditional Chinese medicines). It's so sad that this has been allowed to happen and that for so many years the voices raised in defence of the tiger remained unheard.
The first country to protect the Tiger by law was India, hunting was banned as was the sale of Tiger skins but it was very nearly too late. In 1972 India carried out a nationwide Tiger census and the results were very depressing, from an estimated national population of 40,000 at the turn of the century just 70 years later that figure had dwindled to 1827 animals. Project Tiger was launched in 1973 with the aim of creating Tiger reserves or safe havens for the Tiger population, Ranthambhore Sanctuary (later to become a National Park) was one of the first to be designated. For a while the Tiger population thrived and grew reaching as many as 40 individuals according to a 1986 census.
Unfortunately despite promises by the Indian government there was no coordinated anti-poaching force established and so Tigers continue to be shot and it is thought that the nearby Sariska National Park has lost ALL it's Tigers to poachers, Ranthambhore's own Tiger population is now reckoned to be no higher than 25.
I never expected to see a Tiger when I booked this trip, I thought it would be my only chance to see one in the wild but that chance would be a slim one. As it turned out I actually saw THREE Tigers .. my only disappointment being that none of my photographs turned out good, camera refused to focus, trees in the way, my fellow Tiger watchers in the way, everything conspired against me. Although I cannot claim to have any clear photos of a Tiger I still have the memories of them, how wonderful it would be that in 100 years time people would still be able to see Tigers in the wild .. alas I fear that may not be the case
