We moved to Qatar in September 95 to live there as resident's for 2 years.
It was realy a great time and we found a lot of new friends. O.k. after three days this place gets quite boring, but this is the reason why all the expats stick together and there are a lot of partys, barbecues and so on. And yes we got a liquer permit (only for residents, but tourists get alcohol in the big hotels)! Only from time to time we missed pork - and as germans good sausages and bread.
Although it's a conservative islamic state, you con move and feel free as long you keep the laws. There is more or less no crime at all and we never felt saver.
You are respected by the locals, but we never got closer contact to one of them, what was realy a shame.
