During the winter of 2005 I decided to pay my friend Pasquale a visit and coincide the trip with my birthday which is during the American Thanksgiving holiday. As a special treat he said he wanted to take me to Heidelberg, a wonderful town in Germany with a Christmas Market.
From his home in Konstanz we drove about 2.5 hours to Heidelberg for a day trip. The weather wasn't so bad and we were able to walk around without feeling too cold. We spent most of our time exploring the castle, walking around the market area, eating wonderful bratwurst, drinking gluwhine and stopping at the many little stalls full of Christmas items.
One of the things I really enjoyed about Heidelberg was how compact of a city it is. It can be easily explored on a day trip or a short few days. There is plenty to see and do in Heidelberg and I am looking forward to visiting this city again very soon. |

| | Exploring Heidelberg We had a wonderful time exploring Heidelberg on foot and we basically stayed in and around old town. We arrived in the early afternoon to an somewhat overcast day, but it wasn't too cold. We decided to start our exploring with a visit to the Castle. We parked the car at a car park close to the castle and walked up the long flight of stairs to the top of the castle. What a magnificint view of the Neckar River, Old Bridge, Philosophenweg, Heiliggeishtkirche and the Kornmarkt. We walked around the castle area took tons of pics and decided to skip paying the castle a visit as our time was limited.
We made our way down to Old Town to explore a bit more before visiting the Christmas Market. |
Heidelberg for the Holidays Visiting Heidelberg during the famous Christmas Market was the highlight of my entire trip. I had always wanted to experience the markets in Germany and Heidelberg was a wonderful surprise. We walked around the market, had some delicious bratwurst and gluwhine, did some shopping for Christmas ornaments and for a football scarf for someone back home.
The market came alive after dark when everything seemed to be more alive. It was a fantastic experience I plan to do again in the future. | | |
