The city is built on the original Roman plan and most of the medieval city walls are still intact. One can walk the ramparts for about three miles around the city where four gates lead through the walls as they did in Roman times. The city's crowning glory is York Minster, which took 250 years to build between 1220 and 1470. Within the city the streets are narrow, and many of the houses timber framed.
York Minster Abbey : From Roman times to the present day the site on which York Minster stands has been at the very center of England's religious and political life. The largest medieval church in Northern Europe, York Minster is a wealth of Stained Glass.
