  • Favorite Thing: Who doesn't recognize the most famous and spectacular of all the Roman Fountains???

Immortalized through paintings, engravings, photographs and films (like two of my favorite, 'La Dolce Vita' and 'Three Coins in a Fountain'), it is one of the most beautiful fountains here in Rome.

Fondest Memory: The fountain was built by Nicola Salvi for Pope Clemente II on a wall of the Palazzo Poli and was completed in 1762. Tradition says that if you throw a coin into the fountain over your left shoulder you will return to Rome again soon.

  • Favorite Thing: Nestled between Corso Vittorio and the Tiber River, is this wonderful jumble of umbrella-topped stalls bursting with flowers and vegetables, meats and cheeses, and even T-shirts, hosiery, and luggage. The market takes place each morning except Sunday, and neighbors fill shopping bags with all the very freshest treats of Lazio. Only seasonal foods are found here.

Fondest Memory: Walking throught the beautiful stalls with brightly colored flowers and smells of those wonderful fresh fruits and cheeses.

    Piazza Navona: Piazza Navona

  • Favorite Thing: The Piazza Navona is said to be the most famous and most beautiful of Rome's many squares. This large and lively square which attracts many tourists and locals alike features the three magnificent fountains - The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) the Fontana Moro (Foutain of the Moor) and the Fonatan del Nepttuno (Fountain of Neptune).

Fondest Memory: The square is built on the former Domitian's stadium, built by emperor Domitian in 86 AD. This is why the square has a long and oval shape. I read in my guide book that this stadium had a larger arena than the Colosseum and was mainly used for festivals sporting events.

The stadiun was paved over to created Piazza Navona in the 15th century and remains of Domiitian's stadium are still visible in certain areas.

Piazza Navona: Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi

  • Favorite Thing: Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers)

Fondest Memory: Located her in Piazza Navona is the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

The rivers represented in the fountain are the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile and the Rio de la Plata. They are arranged on a steep rocky reef from which a Roman obelisk taken from the Cirucus of Maxentius rises up into the air. Rumor has it that sculptures on the fountain symbolize the rivalry between Bernini and Borromini. Innocent the X first commissioned Borromini, but Bernini obtained the comminssion by corrupting Donna Olimpia, the Pope's sister-in-law.

  • Favorite Thing: Located on the northern end of Piazza Navona you will find the Fontana di Nettuno (Foutain of Neptune), one of the three fountains located here.

Fondest Memory: The Fontana del Nettuno which is also known as the Calderari was built by Giacomo della Porta (along with the other fountain, Fontana Moro). The statues of Neptune surrounded by sea nymphs were added in the 19th century.

  • Favorite Thing: Fontana del Moro (Fountain of the Moor) located here at Piazza Navona.

Located at the southern end of Piazza Navona you will find Fontana del Moro, designed by Giacomo della Porto. It is said that Bernini built the central figure, a Triton riding a dolphin and which resembles a "moor". There are four statues in all located in the fountain.

Fondest Memory: There are three distinct fountains found here at Piazza Navona, The Fountain of Four Rivers, Fountain of the Moors and the Fountain of Neptune.

I still have a bag of old Lira coins that aren't worth anything any more, so maybe I'll bring them to Rome and throw them over my left shoulder into the Trevi Fountain.
