Favorite thing: The trees, oh the glorious trees!! I love nature and trees in particular, especially trees with thick trunks, many branches and plenty of shade. I love the way the trees look and the peace and serenity I feel when I am around these magnificient living things .
These particular trees where found on the grounds of Botanic Gardens and Domain. Many of the trees are protected by some barriers, while others weren't.
Fondest memory: Enjoying a walk among these magnificient living things was a big hilight for me.
Chris and Laura at Doyle's Watsons Bay
Favorite thing: VT has so many great active members and it was really nice to meet up with a few of them. I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Laura (llaura) on a few occassions during my trip to Sydney. She's a great gal and so much fun to be around. She met us for lunch at Watsons Bay and then again for a few drinks at the Establishment.
Doug (Aussiedoug) is another great Aussie who I had the pleasure of meeting. He meet up with us for lunch on our last day and even drove us to the airport!! (Doug, you own me a visit to the museum, lol)!
Thanks Laura and Doug for making my experience in Sydney a very memorable one!!
Favorite thing: Kangaroos were another creature I wanted to see while in Australia, but in Sydney, the only experience you will have with them is here in Taronga Zoo.
Seeing the Kangaroos in their native land was nice, I guess if I wanted to see one in the wild, I'd have to travel to the "outback".
All in all, it was fun seeing them hop around and finding a comfortable spot to lay in.
My pic with the Koala
Favorite thing: When most people think of Australia they have in their mind a few images, and the Koala is surely one of them. Watching T.V. commercials of Qantas and the cuddly Koala would make anyone want to travel there just to be up close and personal with one of these magnificient creatures. I have seen thousand of Koalas in zoos, but I wanted to actually touch the furry creature.
Fondest memory: When we planned our trip, my only requisite was to get close and personal with a Koala. To my disappointment you are not allowed to touch, feed or otherwise get too close to the Koalas at Taronga Zoo.
The only experience you actually get is to be photographed with these wonderful creatures, a shame, I really wanted to touch that thick coat.
Favorite thing: One of the highlighs to the garden for me were the "flying foxes". Flying Foxes are fruit bats and there were hundreds of them flying in the garden during daylight time making these horrible screaking sounds.
The park ranger informed us that our visit coincided with their mating season. (More info on my Botanic Gardens travelogue).
Silt-drum from Ambrym (Vanatu)
Favorite thing: As we were strolling around the Botanic Gardens/Domain we came across what I thought was a very interesting statue. Turns out this is a silt-drum used in the island of Ambrym Vanatu for what is said to be for "creating rythms for dance, summoning villagers for meetings and transmitting messages".
As you can read on one of the pics, it was presented by the Australia Friends of Vanatu.
Fondest memory: I had a good time behaving like a child hiding behind the drum and being photographed.
Wollemi Tree
Favorite thing: The "Wollemi Pine" is one of the most protected and endangered of the trees found here in the garden. In 1994 one Wollemi Pine was discovered in the Blue Mountain range after being thought extint. You can find a few of the Wollemi Pines planted in the garden. The first tree was grown from a seedling.
The Sacred Ibis
Favorite thing: The Botanic Gardens and Domain were teeming with beautiful and exotic (well for me anyway) birds. It amazed me and I loved the fact that they went about their business while not minding people at all.
Gorgeous gams huh!
Favorite thing: As I have mentioned on a transportation tip earlier, I love to walk, and why not? I've learned that some of the best places I have discovered have been while strolling along at a leisurely pace.
While you're exploring Sydney on foot stop and enjoy the many beautiful sights. You can also find some great little known spots to stop and watch the world go by, so why not just kick up your feet and take in this beautiful harbour city at your own pace?
Fondest memory: Just stopping at the harbour after a long walk and enjoying the beautiful city.
