The hilly ,beautiful vally of Nainital ,with the lake placed in the center, was historically speaking ruled by the "Khasis"(an ancient tribe)thus it was known as "Khasdesh" in the year 1841,Mr P.Barron an "English Merchant, living in Uttarpradesh, founded "Nainital",then slowly it became the summer capital oh the United Province.
In the year 1880, september,a massive landslide,due to torrential rain caused the northern Naini hill to collapse. About 150 people died .This fallen area was levelled and is today known as the "Flats of Nainital".Being the summer capital of the province ,and known as the 'Lake district of India'.Nainital was popular with the domestic tourist folwing in from the plains as well as the British.
The British built a lot of European schools,hospitals, a sanitorium,barracks,a golf course and overalll,the place developed a British character.
The name Nainital originated from the Naini goddess temple situated today, at the upper edge of the lake.Naini meaning EYES and Tal meaning LAKE, is the ideal name for this place.Owing to it's location Nainital is damp and cold ,humidity being less, than other hilly towns.
