This one of the most Southern European cities is the capital of Italy's football 'Sicily'. Founded by the Phoeniscians, it has a rich history of Greek, Roman, Goths, Byzantine, Arab and Norman rulers. Throughout the city (and its surrounings) are innumerable monuments, churches, castles and works of art. Palermo is a typical South Italian city: chaotic, crowded and not as overruled by tourists as cities like Rome, Florence and Venice. In the summer it can be extremely hot but don't forget Palermo is lying on the coast and there are numerous beaches to go to e.g. Mondella is very popular. Anyway, it's better to come in the spring, winter or autumn if you can't stand the dry heat. (pic=Piazza Castelnuovo) |
