Meknes is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco. It is surrounded by a triple protective wall and is clearly divided into the old and new areas. Although Meknes has a long history the present-day city is a result of the rule of Moulay Ismail.

The markets of Meknes cater for all tastes including Berber carpets and kilims. The local craft is metal work with inlaid silver designs - enjoy bargaining for that piece that would look just right on the .....

Meknes is relatively ignored by most tourists. Consequently it also has less of the usual hassles (touts, faux guides, etc) experienced at most other tourist centers. It is the nearest city to the Roman ruins at Volubilis.
