If you travel north along the west coast on State Highway 6 you will eventually arrive in Westport. It is 100 km north of Greymouth. The town lies on the Buller River and its main industries are fishing, coal mining and dairy farming.

Not primarily a tourist town, the most important feature of Westport is it lies close to the start of both the Lewis and Arthur's Passes across the mountains to Christchurch.

Many people start the journey across either of these passes from Greymouth but the coast road north from this city has spectacular scenery and passes the intriguing Punakaiki Pancake Rocks.
