Arthur's Pass was discovered by Europeans in 1864. Arthur Dudley Dobson was a surveyor who was tasked to find a suitable way across the Southern Alps from the Waimakariri valley. The settlement was originally called Camping Flat. It sits at 740 metres above sea level and is at the head of the Otira Gorge to the west.

The town boasts of a post office amd a general store along with a few restaurants and cafes. There are a number of accommodation places as the town is a base for many hikes and walks.

It is one of the best places in New Zealand to find the cheeky Alpine Parrot - the Kea.
